Service · Hedge reduction

Bringing an overgrown hedge back into proportion, without killing it.

Years of light trims instead of real cuts leave a hedge with all its green growth on the outer few inches and bare wood underneath. Cut that back hard in one go on the wrong species and it never recovers. We know which hedges take a hard reduction and which need staging over two seasons.

How reduction works

Conifer hedges - leylandii, thuja, most cypress - do not regenerate from bare brown wood. Cut back past the green and that section is gone for good, so reduction on these species means bringing the height and width down gradually, staying just inside the green each time, over two or three visits.

Deciduous hedges - beech, hornbeam, hawthorn, privet - are more forgiving and can usually take a harder single reduction, though a very neglected hedge still does better staged over a season to avoid shocking it.

Pricing

Reductions typically run £250 – £800 depending on length, current height and how many visits it needs. We always see photos and confirm the plan before quoting a fixed price.
